SMA Fiber Optic Connector 905 and 906

SMA Fiber Optic Connector has two types: the SMA-905 has a straight ferrule, whereas the SMA-906 has a stepped ferrule design. The SMA-905 is a non-contact connector typically used in medical, industrial, and military applications. When two SMA 906 are mated together the stepped ferrule design allows an alignment sleeve to be used and therefore the connection has lower insertion loss. The SMA 905 does not have an alignment sleeve therefore the Insertion Loss of the 905 is higher than that of the 906.
SMA fiber optic connectors and related SMA fiber optic products are widely used in medial, sensor and fiber optic test applications. SMA was developed by Amphenol company and it features the compact size and excellent durability and repeatability.
SMA fiber connectors can be with ceramic ferrule or stainless steel ferrule types. SMA has two versions, the SMA 905 and SMA 906. The difference is SMA 905 connectors adopt straight ferrule while SMA 906 use step ferrule to achieve lower insertion loss. Typical SMA fiber optic connector use 3.175mm ferrule.
SMA-905 connector for 400 um optical fiber for medical laser with 10 W power
Description of SMA connector
SMA connector are simplex and multimode type.
SMA connectors make use of threaded connections and are ideal for military applications because of their low cost multimode coupling.
SMA connectors are available with stainless alloy or stainless steel ferrules. The stainless alloy ferrule may be drilled from 125um to 1550um to accept various fiber sizes.
In addition to their compact size, SMA connector has good mechanical durability. The SMA connector holds a single fiber. SMA connectors have a threaded Coupling nut.
The SMA 905 is a non-contact connector that is widely used in medical, laser, Surgical, industrial , military, spectrometer applications etc. SMA 905 connector has a threaded Coupling nut and a straight ferrule. The Ferrule is traditionally made of stainless steel, although ceramic versions are available. The O.D for SMA fiber connector ferrule typical is 3.17mm. The ferrule design on the SMA 905connector is engineered for large core fibers.

FAQ – SMA 905 and SMA 906 Fiber Optic Connectors
What is the difference between SMA 905 and SMA 906 connectors?
Both connectors use the same threaded interface; however, SMA 905 is commonly used for standard cables and bulkhead mounting, while SMA 906 has a modified design better suited for higher precision or laser applications.
Which fiber types can these connectors support?
They are typically used with multimode fibers ranging from 50 μm to 1000 μm core diameter and can also be adapted for special coatings and high‑power beam delivery fibers.
Can SMA connectors handle high‑power laser transmission?
Yes. SMA 905 and SMA 906 connectors are designed to operate under high optical power conditions using metal ferrules and proper thermal management techniques.
Are they reusable?
Yes, they feature a robust threaded mechanism that allows multiple connections without significant optical loss change.
In what environments are these connectors typically installed?
They are commonly used in industrial, defense, and laboratory systems where mechanical stability and repeatable alignment are critical.
